African Two-Part Hardwood Palaver Chair with Geometric Carving, Mid-20th Century

SKU: 973

Sculptural African palaver chair dating from the mid-20th century, constructed from two substantial pieces of carved hardwood that slot together without permanent fixings. The chair has a low seat and an unusually tall, narrow back, creating a strong vertical silhouette. Its warm reddish-brown colour, broad uninterrupted grain and simple interlocking construction give it equal presence as seating and as a sculptural object.

The larger board forms both the backrest and the rear support. It rises to a softly rounded top and tapers inward toward the seat before widening again into a flared foot. A shallow semicircular cut-out at floor level creates two short contact points and prevents the base from appearing visually heavy. Near the lower back, a horizontal rectangular opening receives the second board.

The smaller board forms the seat and front support. Its broad front edge is rounded like a half-moon, while the underside narrows into a long tongue that passes through the slot in the back board. Once assembled, the seat projects forward at a relaxed angle and the two boards brace one another. From the side, the chair reads as a simple crossing of curved planes; when dismantled, its construction becomes immediately clear and the two elements can be transported or stored flat.

A deeply incised geometric motif decorates the upper backrest. The symmetrical carving is arranged around a central X, with parallel vertical lines above and below and stepped angled lines at either side. The design is cut directly into the timber rather than applied, so shadows within the grooves make the pattern visible while preserving the natural surface. Otherwise the chair is undecorated, allowing the rich grain and subtle colour variation of the wood to remain prominent.

The assembled chair measures approximately 91 cm high, 35 cm wide and 80 cm deep, with a seat height of 38 cm. Its low, reclined posture suits occasional seating, a reading corner or display in an interior where the outline can be seen from several angles. The specific country, workshop and cultural origin have not been documented, so no narrower regional attribution is asserted.

The chair is in good vintage condition and assembles securely. The wood shows scratches, dents, dark marks, edge wear, colour variation and a developed surface patina consistent with age and use. Small irregularities and tool marks are visible at the carved motif, slot and lower edges. These signs do not interrupt the strong silhouette or the legibility of the two-part construction.

  • Detailed condition
