André Ricard Spanish Modern Twin-Shade Black Table Lamp for Metalarte, 1970s
Designed by André Ricard in 1973 for Metalarte, this elegant table lamp was originally commissioned for the reading room of the Biblioteca de Barcelona. It is the original, early model—compact, refined, and rarer than the later, taller variation released a few years afterward.
The lamp features a symmetrical twin-shade design in glossy black lacquered metal, supported by a central spine in brushed aluminum. Its construction is clean and balanced, allowing the shades to slide laterally while maintaining a low, directional light ideal for reading or ambient tasks. The flat, folded aluminum base enhances the lamp’s architectural profile, offering both visual harmony and functional stability.
This piece is a quintessential example of Spanish mid-century modernism—thoughtfully designed, user-centered, and stripped of decorative excess. Ricard’s approach is rooted in purpose and precision, and this lamp reflects his belief that good design quietly serves daily life.
Marked by the maker and preserved in excellent vintage condition, it remains a rare find—especially in its original format. A standout addition to any serious mid-century collection, it pairs beautifully with modernist interiors where functionality and form meet in perfect balance.
