FOC Child Desk Chair Set White Metal Wood School Mid Century Portugal 1960's

A rare and characterful mid-century children’s desk and chair set produced by FOC (Fábrica Osório Castro) in Portugal during the 1960s, clearly reflecting the influence of functionalist European school furniture design, particularly in the manner of Friso Kramer. This set embodies the honest, utilitarian aesthetic of post-war educational environments, where durability, ergonomics, and simplicity were paramount.
The structure is executed in white-painted tubular steel, giving the piece a light, architectural presence while ensuring robustness. The chair features a bent steel frame with a floating plywood seat and backrest, both in a warm-toned varnished wood that has developed a beautiful patina over time. The desk combines a laminated top with a subtle linear texture and solid wood edging, paired with a sculptural wooden compartment beneath the surface—an elegant detail that elevates it beyond purely utilitarian design. A metal side rack for books or notebooks further reinforces its original school function.
What makes this set particularly compelling is the balance between industrial precision and organic warmth. The contrast between the crisp white metal frame and the rich wood tones creates a visually striking composition that sits comfortably within both modern and vintage interiors.
Condition is good vintage, with expected signs of use consistent with age, including minor wear to the paint, surface marks to the wood, and light patina throughout, all contributing to its authentic character.
A highly collectible and increasingly scarce example of Portuguese mid-century school design, ideal for collectors or as a distinctive decorative piece.
