Jens Quistgaard Dansk Designs Spider Cast Iron Candle Holder Danish Modern

e Spider candle holder, originally introduced under the name Tiny Taper, was designed in 1962 by Jens Harald Quistgaard for Dansk Designs and remains one of the most iconic small-scale objects of Danish modern design. Compact in size yet highly expressive, the Spider was conceived to hold up to twelve Tiny Taper candles, arranged across two subtly tiered levels that create a dense, architectural constellation of vertical light when in use.
Cast in solid iron, the holder features a distinctive rough, sandy black surface that highlights the raw qualities of the material while reinforcing the sculptural character of the form. The radial arms extend outward from a central circular opening, their rounded ends and rhythmic repetition giving the piece its arachnid-like silhouette from which its enduring nickname derives. Despite its industrial materiality, the design feels balanced and organic, a hallmark of Quistgaard’s approach to functional objects.
Thoughtful detailing elevates the piece beyond pure sculpture. The base ‘feet’ are finished with smooth black enameled pads, specifically designed to protect the surface on which the candle holder rests, reflecting Dansk’s emphasis on everyday usability alongside visual impact. While the Spider was also produced in various enameled color finishes, the cast iron version is widely regarded as the most authentic expression of the design.
When unlit, the Spider reads as a compact modernist object; when fully fitted with candles, it becomes a striking centrepiece that transforms scale, light, and repetition into a powerful visual statement. A timeless example of Danish design intelligence, equally relevant today as at the moment of its creation.
