Kaare Klint Large White Model 101 Lantern Pendant for Le Klint, Designed 1944

Large Model 101 pendant, known as the Lantern, designed by Kaare Klint in 1944 and produced by Le Klint in the 21st century. This is the largest version, measuring 53 cm high and 42 cm in diameter. Its closed white shade forms a near-spherical lantern with a narrow neck at the top and a small opening at the base, creating a substantial but visually light object for a dining room, stairwell or entrance hall.
The shade is formed from a single sheet of white material folded by hand into an intricate three-dimensional structure. Long vertical pleats run from the top toward the middle, where they meet a second system of diagonal cross-folds. These intersecting creases create repeated elongated diamonds around the body. Toward the lower opening, the folds compress into a tight fan before turning inward, so the construction appears continuous from every angle.
When switched off, changing daylight produces a quiet rhythm of highlights and shadows across the crisp white facets. When illuminated, the entire shade glows with a warm, even light. The deepest folds remain slightly darker, making the diamond pattern more legible and emphasising the volume of the lantern. The bulb itself is screened from ordinary viewing angles, allowing the pendant to provide diffuse ambient light without glare.
The Model 101 demonstrates the combination of geometry and handcraft associated with Le Klint. Its complex round form originates in the controlled folding of a flat rectangular sheet, without applied decoration. The visual interest comes entirely from the precision of the pleats, the repetition of the facets and the way the white surface modulates light. Kaare Klint's design has remained in production because the structure is both technically ingenious and calm enough to work in a wide range of interiors.
This example is in good used condition. The white surface shows light dust, scattered small marks, gentle age-related discolouration and minor irregularities or softening along some folds. The overall spherical shape remains complete, the pleated pattern is clearly defined and no major structural loss is apparent in the photographs. The suspension and electrical components should be checked by a qualified electrician for compatibility with local standards before installation.
