National Panasonic RL-106G Red Six-Transistor Portable Radio, Japan, circa 1971
National Panasonic RL-106G portable radio manufactured by Matsushita Electric in Japan circa 1971. The radio has a compact rectangular body in vivid tomato-red moulded plastic, with a large integrated carrying handle rising above the case. Measuring 26.5 cm wide, 18 cm high and 11.5 cm deep, it has the sturdy proportions of a practical portable appliance and the bright colour of early 1970s consumer design.
The front is divided into two clearly organised areas. Horizontal red ribs form the speaker grille across the left side, while a brushed silver-coloured control panel occupies the right. A long black tuning window runs across the upper part of the panel and carries white frequency markings with a red indicator. Two large circular knobs sit below, labelled for volume and tuning. Their silver faces and black centres echo the contrast of the tuning display. The National Panasonic name and model designation are printed above the scale.
The handle is a broad open rectangle moulded as part of the red case. Recessed divisions along its upper edge strengthen the structure and repeat the linear rhythm of the front grille. The side panels are plain and slightly tapered, giving the radio a clean profile when carried. Small moulded feet raise the cabinet just above a tabletop.
The back is closed by a brown fibreboard panel secured within the red plastic shell. A field of circular perforations releases sound and ventilation, while printed instructions identify the RL-106G as a six-transistor receiver. The rear also records the Japanese manufacturer and battery arrangement. A black quarter-turn fastener marked open and close provides access to the battery compartment and internal chassis. The original printed panel, handle, knobs and tuning scale are all present.
This radio works equally well as a decorative object and as an example of compact Japanese industrial design. Its strong red case, simple controls and graphic silver-and-black face make it visually legible from across a room. Cosmetic condition is good for its age, with scratches, scuffs, small marks and wear to the plastic, faceplate and tuning window. The rear panel shows patina and rubbing. Operational condition has not been independently verified, so the radio is offered as untested.
