Postmodern Papilio 3 Trier Glass Side Table by Alessandro Mendini for Zanotta
  • Postmodern Papilio 3 Trier Glass Side Table by Alessandro Mendini for Zanotta

    SKU: 859

A striking example of 1990s Italian postmodern design, this "Papilio" three-tier side table was designed by Alessandro Mendini for Zanotta. Named after the Latin word for butterfly, "Papilio," the table's fluid, organic glass surfaces evoke the delicate and asymmetrical movement of butterfly wings.

This sculptural piece features three irregularly shaped clear glass tiers, stacked at varying heights to create a dynamic, layered effect. The hand-finished aluminum legs, with their softly undulating form and metallic sheen, provide a striking contrast to the crisp transparency of the glass. The result is a table that feels both light and structurally bold—a true statement piece from one of Italy’s most visionary designers.

Mendini, a key figure in the Radical Design and Memphis movements, was known for blending playfulness with avant-garde aesthetics. His work for Zanotta, one of Italy’s most forward-thinking manufacturers, exemplifies the postmodern fascination with asymmetry, deconstructivism, and unexpected material contrasts.

There is a small crack in the lower part of the upper glass at one end (visible in the images), but it is practically unnoticeable and does not affect the overall integrity or aesthetic of the piece.

An iconic collectible, this table is perfect for design aficionados and collectors of Italian postmodernism, seamlessly complementing interiors that embrace bold, sculptural, and artful furniture.
