Preben Dal Red and Orange Symfoni Pendant for Hans Følsgaard, Denmark, 1960s
Symfoni rhomboid pendant lamp designed by Danish architect Preben Dal for Hans Følsgaard A/S in the 1960s. Compact in size but visually complex, the pendant is assembled from a sequence of flat metal planes arranged around a central light source. The overlapping forms create a faceted, downward-pointing volume that changes appearance as the viewer moves around it.
The upper part of the shade is a square cream-coloured perforated metal plate, rotated so that its four corners read as a diamond when the lamp hangs. Below it, successive rhomboid and triangular panels step inward and downward. Their alternating burgundy, raspberry-red, coral and orange finishes produce a warm gradient, while narrow gaps between the planes reveal flashes of light. Seen from below, the layers form a symmetrical geometric pattern around the concealed bulb.
The perforated top performs both a visual and practical role. Thousands of small round openings soften the upper surface, allow heat to escape and release a subtle glow toward the ceiling. The solid coloured panels shield the bulb from direct view, so the strongest light is reflected between the layers and cast downward in warm orange and red tones. When unlit, the pendant reads as a crisp piece of folded geometric sculpture; when illuminated, the interior surfaces become brighter and the depth of the layered construction is much more pronounced.
A white ceramic lampholder sits at the centre of the upper plate, connected to a white fabric-covered cord and a simple white ceiling rose. The shade measures approximately 30 cm wide by 30 cm deep and 20 cm high, giving it enough presence for a dining corner, hallway or grouped lighting arrangement without overwhelming a smaller room.
The lamp is in good vintage condition. The lacquered panels show scratches, small chips, edge wear, marks and localised paint loss. The cream perforated plate has discolouration, oxidation and accumulated surface wear, all visible in the photographs. The metal elements remain correctly assembled and the geometric form is intact. The lamp has been photographed illuminated; its vintage wiring and components should be checked by a qualified electrician before installation in a new location.
Detailed condition
Good vintage condition. The lacquered surfaces show small scratches, paint losses and marks consistent with age. Minor oxidation is present on metal components. The shade retains its form and displays well. Photographed illuminated; electrical components should be checked for local standards before installation.
