Raak Bolide Wall Lamp Hermian Sneyders De Vogel White Metal Starburst 1960s Form

SKU: 932

The Bolide wall lamp, designed by Hermian Sneyders De Vogel for Raak in the 1960s, is a striking example of Dutch space-age lighting at its most expressive and sculptural. Conceived during a period of intense experimentation in form and material, the design captures the optimism and futurism that defined postwar European modernism.
Its defining feature is the dramatic radial composition of slender, curved metal blades that fan outward from a polished chromed sphere at the centre. These layered elements create a dynamic sense of movement, resembling an exploding starburst or solar flare frozen in time. When illuminated, the lamp projects an intricate play of light and shadow across the wall, transforming a simple surface into an atmospheric sculptural backdrop. The effect is both architectural and poetic — light becomes structure, and structure becomes light.
The softly domed wall plate anchors the composition, while the off-white lacquered metal surfaces lend warmth and subtle contrast to the reflective central sphere. The design embodies Raak’s distinctive approach to lighting: combining industrial precision with theatrical visual impact. The pull-cord switch adds a functional detail typical of the era and enhances its sculptural presence when mounted.
Two of the metal blades have lost their original small connection dots where they meet the structure. They remain in position and can be carefully balanced so that the visual rhythm of the composition is preserved, and once installed the difference is not noticeable in normal viewing. This is clearly shown in the detail images and reflected in the condition.
Now regarded as one of Raak’s most recognisable decorative wall designs, the Bolide stands comfortably between lighting and wall art. Whether used individually or as part of a composition, it brings a strong spatial presence to interiors — particularly effective in minimal, modern, or architectural settings where light and shadow can fully unfold.
A quintessential example of 1960s European design ambition, this piece remains both visually dramatic and conceptually refined.
